MCR Steel Buildings has always held a strong sense of communnity and continues to be involved in numerous philanthropic activities throughout the year. This year, when we had the opportunity to partner with Churches Helping Churches to provide construction services in Carrefour, Haiti we jumped at the opportunity. MCR Steel Buildings teamed up with Meheen Engineering to provide engineering services to design a steel church building that would withstand major seismic activity (8.0 earthquake) and huricane strength winds (up to 140 mph). The design was comprised of 85% of materials that could be locally sourced in Haiti and utilized construction methods that would allow the Haitian church congregation to participate in the building erection using primarily hand held tools. This local sourcing method kept money in Haiti, therefore providing jobs and resources for the local economy. MCR Steel Buildings directly provided two Project Managers for the Church of the Final Hour in Carrefour, Haiti. Our two Project Managers spent a four weeks in Haiti with numerous congregation volunteers working long hours to not only finsh the project, but teach them the skills needed to proceed independently on future reconstruction activities. Not only did we teach them techniques and steel construction methods, we provided them certifications in Steel Construction. We are looking forward to finishing the next 9 steel churches in November and December while working towards a total goal of completing 19 churches throughout Haiti in 2011 and 2012.
